Sligo were due to take on Galway in the Connacht SFC semi-finals this afternoon

Sligo’s senior footballers have dismissed reports that they did not want their clash against Galway this weekend to go ahead.

The Yeats County were due to take on the Tribesmen this afternoon in the semi-finals of the Connacht senior football championship.

However, the Sligo county board were forced to concede the fixture due to an outbreak of Covid-19 within the squad, which saw seven players test positive for the virus earlier this week.

A statement released by the players via Ocean FM last night said that the decision was out of their control.

"The perception Sligo did not want to fulfil this weekend’s fixture is incorrect,” the statement read.

"All who could feasibly make themselves available wanted to play the game.

"The players are disappointed the game could not proceed for reasons outside their control.

"No member of the panel will be making any further comment at this time."
